Temporary and Constant Toner Leakage
Generally speaking, toner leakage issue refers to excessive toner found outside toner cartridges due to poor sealing. But actually there are two kinds of toner leakage issue. One is temporary toner leakage and the other one is constant toner leakage. Compared with constant toner leakage, temporary toner leakage issue won’t affect the performance of toner cartridges in printers and thus should not be taken as product quality issue.
Cause of Temporary Toner Leakage
Temporary toner leakage is usually found on toner cartridges without sealing tape. When the toner cartridges are violently shaken during transportation, a small amount of toner may leak around the developer roller. There are 2 possible reasons for temporary toner leakage issue:
a) When a cartridge falls from a certain height or is shaken violently during transportation, the sealing components inside the cartridge may have slight distortion and thus creates seams around these sealing components. Therefore, the toner will possibly come out of toner hopper through the seams. However, the sealing components will restore to its original status and the seams will disappear after the fall or shake is over.
b) Even the cartridges are well sealed, we can still find seams between inner components of the cartridges. When the cartridges are under still condition or only slightly shaken, the toner is unable to pass through these seams. But when the cartridge falls from a certain height or is shaken violently during transportation, these seams will enlarge and creates possibility for the pass of the toner. Nevertheless, just as what has already been mentioned above, the seams will restore to its original status after the fall or shake is over.
Thus, excessive toner outside the cartridge shall not be all regarded as quality defect. To distinguish temporary and constant toner leakage issues, we can simply clean the excessive toner and slightly shake the cartridge for a few times. If no more excessive toner came out, the cartridge can be used as normal one and printed as usual. If excessive toner continued to come out, the cartridge is with constant toner leakage issue and should be returned to the vendor for changing a new one. According to what Consumables Asia has found, both OEM products and replacement ones have temporary toner leakage issues. When Consumables Asia runs vertical impact test by dropping on OEM and products, temporary leakage issue is found even more severe on OEM products.
Approach to Temporary Toner Leakage
To prevent temporary toner leakage issue, Consumables Asia can delivery the powder-absorbing sponge to the protecting cover on most of its toner cartridges without sealing tape. At the same time, the technicians are developing new packing material and strengthening the physical structure of our cartridges, hoping to better seal them and reduce the impact of poor transportation condition. But still, there’s no guarantee that the cartridges are 100% with no temporary leakage issue. There are a few things you can do when you have a cartridge with temporary toner leakage issue:
a) Clean the excessive toner outside the cartridge. If excessive toner is found stuck between gears, disassemble the cartridge and clean those gears. Then assemble the cartridge to continue normal use.
b) Contact the company that provides delivery service for your cartridge. Ask the delivery company to improve their transportation and handling.
c) For those cartridges with sealing tape, do not remove the package and tape unless in need of using one. During the procedure of installation, hold the cartridge on hand bar, avoid touching and squeezing other components.
d) When removing the sealing tape or during printing process, a small amount of toner may come out and stick on outer plastic case of the cartridge. Don’t worry, the excessive toner won’t affect the performance of the cartridge neither.
